First impressions are more than just a smile, firm handshake, and eye contact; a first impression includes what you ask and how you say it!
If you think back on your week, how many times have you asked the same question: “How are you?”. Did you feel obligated to simply answer “Great!” or “It’s going well!” Is that also where the conversation kind of stopped and you both didn’t know where to go next? Does the question feel lackluster when you hear it and do you even care to know the answer when you ask? (aka BORING! 😴)
Can you see where we’re going with this blog? We’re looking to give the question “How are you?” a makeover, by offering 5 alternative questions courtesy of Forbes.com. These questions are more positive and attentive and will help you become more likable (essential in the business world!)

➄ What is one thing we could do right now to make this (day, project, event) even better?
Talk about LOADED questions! Let’s dissect why!
Question 1 inspires you to dig into every positive interaction you had throughout the entire day. It pushes you to think about all the good in your life and shapes your frame of thinking. It also shows that you are invested in learning about what has been happening to them and value hearing details about their life.
Question 2 stretches your mindset into thinking about difficulties and transforming them into positive affirmations. Take, for example, you are learning photoshop or, more closely related to our company, a brand-new sales campaign (from scratch), and you’re having a lot of difficulties mastering the new task. Question 2 changes you from saying “I’m struggling with…” to “I’m excited to figure out how to master…”
Question 3 might be one of our favorite questions. We think it’s especially cool because it allows the person you are talking with to share their more creative side and it shows your genuine interest to learn about it too. We guarantee that when you ask a deeper question than “what are you thinking about” and ask people Question 3 you’re going to see eyes light up, eyebrows raise, and even some people will stop themselves in conversation, tell you what a great question that is and takes time to think about how to appropriately answer back.
Question 4 similar to Question 2 drives people to talk about their newest learning challenges in a positive atmosphere that may have a long-term effect on how they view a new project. By you simply phrasing your question as a positive they may change their negative way of thinking of difficulties as adventures they now want to conquer!
Question 5 is a really cool way for business colleagues to inspire group thinking and shows they value each other. Just imagine being asked that by your professor, colleague, boss, or one of your managers. After giving your input to them and seeing how well your thoughts and ideas are received, don’t you think you’d be more invested in helping achieve a common goal? We know it motivates us when our clients ask for help and our input!
People want to know you value them. People only care about how much you know after they know how much you care. About a month ago, E&L Global Communications said goodbye to our winter intern, Katie Kierchoff. If you’ve followed us on any of our social media sites you’ve come to realize how monumental she’s been in our growth and expansion and how difficult it will be for us to replace her! That’s why this month’s blog is going to be a little Q&A session we had with her before she left!
Before we hop into the Q&A, here’s a little background on this #bossbabe. Katie attends Concordia University on an athletic scholarship. She holds two jobs and is a full-time athlete (WOAH!). During her winter break, she didn’t miss a beat and decided to take on an internship with our company as an Operations Manager Intern. She was crucial in that role and even branched out into a leadership position during her short 8-week internship.
Her favorite coffee drink is simple, a vanilla latte and her favorite food is, of course, TACOS! Chicken with some avocado to be exact. Katie is always 100% herself. She describes herself as really outgoing and not shy at all.Long-term, her goal is to travel around the world, touching base in every continent, even Antarctica. So far she’s been to Mexico, Canada, and just recently went to Niagara Falls. Over the summer she’s going to Austria, then she is traveling to Berlin an Prague for lacrosse where she is going to compete in the Prague cup. It’s not the main national team but it is a smaller national team and she’s PUMPED!
Okay, so now that you know how crazy awesome she is, here’s our interview with Katie Kiechoff, E&L Global Communications winter Operations Management Intern.
What do you study? I’m a Junior in College Concordia University and studying Marketing. I’m looking to move into Digital Media marketing in the future
What were you looking for in an internship? I was really just looking for experience in any business. I wanted to understand how to work in an office more than just grabbing coffee and filing papers or answering the phones. I really wanted to apply the strategies I’m learning in school.
Where have you been able to apply those strategies most? While working in operations where I worked with the software, made sure the equipment ran properly, and everything connected between the customers and the representatives. I took on a leadership role in the operations end quickly where I became not just an intern but was responsible for high end answers. I’ve had a lot of experience in a leadership realm in sports but this was really me taking on a leadership level in the office where it was high stakes; money on the line and customers/client relations were involved.
What sports do you play? I play Lacrosse at Concordia and am actually the team captain. I also teach private lessons and coach lacrosse. At Concordia, I participate in Athletes in Action, which is a community group within the campus for your sport. Each team has 1 representative and that rep runs meeting for the team and then that rep takes that information to the team. It’s more for comraderies and facetime than logistics
What did you like most about working at E&L Global Communications? I loved the friendly environment and positive environment. Even if you make a mistake they won’t shove your face in it. They are going to show you how to do better and then when you do well or just even okay they give you constant positive reinforcement that it makes you want to do more and do better. You become invested in their happiness because it’s so genuine.
What did you like least? (laughs) “Oh man, that’s a hard question. This isn’t really in their control but getting up super early because the office is about an hour away with traffic.”
What would you recommend to anyone who works at E&L Global Commuications or to any future interns? Don’t be afraid to take on a leadership role. During my first week I was nervous to take on a leadership role because I was super new with the company and I was afraid to step on anyone’s toes because they were there longer than me. I eventually branched out because I realized that for me to effectively do what I needed to do in the operations role I needed to have confidence and needed to act as if I have power in the room because that’s how I was going to demand respect and get my job done.

A lot can be said about businesses that end the year strong and that’s just what we did here at E&L Global Communications. Both in November and December, our company was recognized as our client’s number 1 asset nationwide.
How did we do it?
How did our company stay motivated when many other businesses fell into the holiday season trap? How did our team not only push through and stay consistent but also exceed our targets and see growth over those months?
When we sat down and thought about it, 5 things came to mind:
The goal = TOTAL DOMINATION
This might be weird to say but being number 1 wasn’t our goal. Claiming a gold medal or taking the number 1 spot doesn’t always mean you’re doing well. If everyone is doing poorly and you just barely do better, that’s not enough. We wanted to dominate our market and blow our client’s away. To do that, we focused on being our best versions and beating our numbers from November.
We began with the end in mind.
In sales it’s easy to say “there are ups and downs” or “it’s seasonal” or “there are good months and bad months”. At E&L Global Communications, we would argue that the seasons and months are only as strong as your mindset. If you believe sales is seasonal, then it will be. If you believe that you can hit your goals regardless of day, week, month, or season, you open the door for much more success.
We began with the end in mind (the end being TOTAL domination). We knew that, if we were going to exceed our November, we had to keep have a relentless focus on the goal. we had to be completely in the zone. We had to wake up hungry and go to bed wanting more. Having such a clear goal made our path simple and structured.
We set our standards high
Have you ever heard the phrase- shoot for the stars and you might land on the moon? It’s easy to become complacent when you are on top. It would have been easy for us to be okay with doing what we did in November; therefore, we set our November numbers right below our standard and raised expectations. Why? Because the goal is always constant and never-ending improvement.
We knew that the right players make the right team
Not to brag too much but the individuals who make up the E&L Global Communications are some of the best individuals we’ve ever worked with. They constantly look to grow, develop, train, and come through for our clients. Like cause and effect, there is a bond within our team to see everyone else succeed that it drives everyone to perform even better and so on and so forth. Care + Commitment + Grit = Success
In December we saw numerous people step into leadership roles and training roles, take on new responsibilities, and morph into team leaders that could lead others to success.
We set out to have fun!
We have a lot of fun as a team and organization. Referring back to our 1st tip of keeping the goal in mind and our relentless attitude for success, nothing could make what we do more worth it than having a great team of positive minded, driven, and fun-loving people. Working with people who motivate you and make you laugh? #wining!
With such lofty goals, we knew we had to make the journey fun and filled with rewards along the way. We ran competitions, we competed with one another, and we shared a ton of laughs! (Peep our Instagram for proof!) Just keep in mind that the amount of fun you have starts with you. Your attitude determines your present which, in turn, affects your future.
So there you have it! Those were the big 5 things that worked for us in December.
2017 ended as a great year for E&L Global Communications and we’re taking this momentum into 2018. Our office is growing and we’re ready to meet with our clients in Dallas for our annual “Keys to Success” meeting where we will discuss our goals for 2018. Here in Troy, Michigan, the goal is triple in size and open two new branches.
How will we do it? By focusing on our 5️⃣ ingredients for success.
It’s not often you meet someone like Carla – professional, goal-oriented, humble, and hard-working. In fact, from her preliminary interview with E&L Global Communications back in June, we knew she was special.
A Detroit native, Carla grew up with a personality as big as her dreams. The youngest child of three girls, she grew up empowered by her mother with a vision of being a lawyer or a doctor. An outgoing child, Carla expressed herself early on through English & Art classes, writing essays on Johnny Cochran and how he inspired her to pursue law, and poems about coping with her moms illness. In 7th grade she even helped found a poetry club for her middle school, helping other students learn how to express themselves and share their voice.
In high school Carla joined her school’s track team, exercising her competitive spirit and desire to win – two traits she still holds today that help her continuously break records at E&L Global Communications! Enrolling immediately after high school at Wayne State, Carla received her Associates, but quickly realized that Law was not what she saw herself doing long-term anymore. She accepted her first position in retail sales and immediately found a niche working face-to-face with consumers. Her love for communication was so apparent that customers and co-workers were drawn to her – something that hasn’t changed since her first job outside of college 10 years ago!
After gaining invaluable experience in sales, Carla was offered a job working as an Administrative Manager for a local Detroit-based construction company! Whether she was helping with purchasing, payroll, or negotiating contracts, Carla’s good nature and easy going personality made her a trusted go-to within the company. After she invested 5 years, though, and didn’t see any internal advancement opportunities, Carla realized that it was time for her to pursue a career that would allow her to further her leadership & management skills elsewhere.
Upon putting her resume on Ziprecruiter, she (naturally) receive a lot of attention and job interviews, but remembers her experience interviewing with E&L Global Communications as the most memorable of all. Attracted to the company’s mission, contagious energy, and growth structure, Carla knew that she had found her home and the last stop she wanted to make on her career train.
Since starting with the company in July, Carla has redefined her goals and what success means to her. With intentions of being promoted into an Assistant Management role within the company in the next 2 months, she comes to work every day ready to work and eager to win. A continuous pace-setter in national sales rankings, Carla shows us that generating new customers for our client is all a matter of your attitude and your mindset. Since her promotion to Lead Client Manager last month, she know holds responsibilities coaching, training, and mentoring new hires for the company.
When asked what she loves most about working at E&L Global Communications, Carla responds “the relationships built; whether I’m interacting with my coworkers, customers, or managers, I feel like I’m working with like-minded people – people who make me want to work harder and are genuinely interested in my success.
If there’s one thing we’re certain of, it’s that there are great things in store for Carla and this blog is just the first of many accomplishments coming her way. As excited as we are about what she has done in 2 short months, we are even enthusiastic about her future within E&L Global Communications and the places she sees herself taking the company. We wanted her to know that her contributions are immense and seen by our entire Executive Team. Carla – keep up the amazing work. You make us proud!

In representing the caliber of clientele that we do, it is imperative that leaders within E&L Global Communications act with high character and morality at all times. We value our partnership with our client, their customers, and our team, and would never want to jeopardize that by taking a shortcut in business.

They know that in order to get the team results they desire, they must be willing to set the pace and throw out a few challenges here and there to keep everyone on their toes! We value competitiveness in a leader because we know they will be driven long after external motivational factors fade. The internal fire that fuels an athlete to practice when their entire body aches are what also fuels leaders within E&L Global Communications.
Leaders remain humble.
They are confident, but not arrogant. They know the day they have the mindset that they’ve arrived, they will fall from grace just as quickly. A true leader knows they must continue to ask questions, seek knowledge and learn from others in positions they desire while remaining likable and approachable.

It’s one of the most famous annual sporting events in the United States. It’s where champions are made. It’s March Madness.
Basketball is a huge topic of conversation at E&L Global Communications, especially during March! As we anxiously await the Final Four this weekend, we have chosen to share an exclusive interview with our very own collegiate basketball player – our VP of Marketing, Meshak!
So, Meshak, how did you initially get interested in basketball?
I initially got interested in basketball by staying up late and sneaking up in the living room so that I could catch the Lakers game at 4-5 AM. I fell in love with the sport just by watching it.
Now that’s dedication! Who did you play for in college and which position did you play?
I played for a small school in Southern Indiana called Vincennes University as a Point Guard.
We have to ask, who is your favorite basketball player of all time?
That would be none other than Kobe Bryant!
Kobe Bryant is an amazing basketball player! Now, on to college basketball. We know you love March Madness, but what is your favorite aspect of it?
The non-stop basketball games – the underdog story is always thrilling!
Agreed! Next, we think we can guess this based on fan memorabilia in your office (haha), but who is your favorite collegiate team and why?
That’s easy – The North Carolina Tar Heels! I love the legendary coach, Dean Smith, and the history of the program.
Nice choice! And who is your favorite collegiate player?
Nigel Hayes (a Forward for the University of Wisconsin); he plays his heart out and stands up for what he believes in!
We’re going to play devil’s advocate here and ask, who is your least favorite collegiate team?
Haha, that would be the Duke Blue Devils. When they were beat by South Carolina this year, I really enjoyed that.
On that note, what is your favorite collegiate rivalry?
UNC vs Duke – the excitement and anticipation is like no other!
Who do you predict will win the National Championship?
UNC is going to win it all and cut down the nets in April! I can’t wait to see it happen!
Love the confidence! Last question, how has playing basketball helped in your professional career?
It has really taught me the fundamentals of leadership and how to be proactive instead of reactive. If execution doesn’t begin with planning and preparation, your goal then becomes a wish. Competition has always been a core value for me. By playing sports my whole life, I have learned that you can have results or excuses, but not both.

Steve Jobs famously said, “it doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.” There is no better way to summarize the feelings we have about Suzanne Neforos than to say we followed Job’s quote and hired one of the smartest, most energetic young professionals we’ve ever met!
Born and raised in North Olmsted, OH, Suzanne has been a social butterfly since birth! Described by her family as outgoing, determined, and creative, she was involved in nearly every activity under the sun as a child and teen – french club, key club, musical theater, thespian troupe, Concert Choir, and a vocal jazz group! Attending Kent State after high school due to the proximity to family and homey feel, Suzanne knew she had found her home for the next 4 years. She kept busy between gospel choir, Relay for Life, American Marketing Association and as a legacy to the Delta Gamma sorority! It was there as a New Member Educator to incoming sisters that Suzanne found her love for recruitment and training.
Majoring in Managerial Marketing and minoring in International Business/Communication Studies, Suzanne knew from high school that she wanted to be in a sales management position, preferably as her own boss. Something about dressing up in a suit, building strong relationships with clients and helping improve their business operations intrigued her. Immediately after college, she started working as a Marketing Specialist for a chemical company, traveling 5 days a week to different states to train sales representatives. Learning extensive skills in negotiations, acquisitions, and face to face communications, Suzanne left to start a career in pharmaceutical sales.
Something interesting happened, though, and despite experience in business to business sales, a 4-year degree, and all the necessary certifications, Suzanne had trouble finding gainful employment. It was then she ran across the Management Development Program at E&L Global Communications and never looked back. A believer in performance-based growth, Suzanne excelled into both leadership and management roles; so much that she was offered an opportunity last year to oversee the entire Human Resources Department. Since her promotion, E&L Global Communications has grown into a respected small business in the local Detroit/Troy community and a haven for marketing/sales professionals looking for more career growth.
On the weekends, she LOVES to try new restaurants – preferably sushi and Mexican. She’s a fur mom to two, Shameless (on Netflix) binge-watcher, barre extraordinaire, THE biggest fan of the real housewife series (ATL, NYC, OC – all of them!), and a believer in spending quality time with the people that matter most to her – her family and significant other. She lives by the strength and grace she learned from her mother, the knowledge that she is exactly where she is in life because of her efforts, and the desire to make E&L Global Communications the most sought after marketing firm in the Midwest. This isn’t the first or the last you’ll hear of this firecracker, as the pride we have for Suzanne’s character and work is immense.
