Katie Kierchoff- the intern we’ll never be able to replace!

About a month ago, E&L Global Communications said goodbye to our winter intern, Katie Kierchoff. If you’ve followed us on any of our social media sites you’ve come to realize how monumental she’s been in our growth and expansion and how difficult it will be for us to replace her! That’s why this month’s blog is going to be a little Q&A session we had with her before she left!

Before we hop into the Q&A, here’s a little background on this #bossbabe. Katie attends Concordia University on an athletic scholarship. She holds two jobs and is a full-time athlete (WOAH!). During her winter break, she didn’t miss a beat and decided to take on an internship with our company as an Operations Manager Intern. She was crucial in that role and even branched out into a leadership position during her short 8-week internship.

Her favorite coffee drink is simple, a vanilla latte and her favorite food is, of course, TACOS! Chicken with some avocado to be exact. Katie is always 100% herself. She describes herself as really outgoing and not shy at all.Long-term, her goal is to travel around the world, touching base in every continent, even Antarctica. So far she’s been to Mexico, Canada, and just recently went to Niagara Falls. Over the summer she’s going to Austria, then she is traveling to Berlin an Prague for lacrosse where she is going to compete in the Prague cup. It’s not the main national team but it is a smaller national team and she’s PUMPED!

Okay, so now that you know how crazy awesome she is, here’s our interview with Katie Kiechoff, E&L Global Communications winter Operations Management Intern.

What do you study? I’m a Junior in College Concordia University and studying Marketing. I’m looking to move into Digital Media marketing in the future

What were you looking for in an internship? I was really just looking for experience in any business. I wanted to understand how to work in an office more than just grabbing coffee and filing papers or answering the phones. I really wanted to apply the strategies I’m learning in school.

Where have you been able to apply those strategies most? While working in operations where I worked with the software, made sure the equipment ran properly, and everything connected between the customers and the representatives. I took on a leadership role in the operations end quickly where I became not just an intern but was responsible for high end answers. I’ve had a lot of experience in a leadership realm in sports but this was really me taking on a leadership level in the office where it was high stakes; money on the line and customers/client relations were involved.

What sports do you play? I play Lacrosse at Concordia and am actually the team captain. I also teach private lessons and coach lacrosse. At Concordia, I participate in Athletes in Action, which is a community group within the campus for your sport. Each team has 1 representative and that rep runs meeting for the team and then that rep takes that information to the team. It’s more for comraderies and facetime than logistics

What did you like most about working at E&L Global Communications? I loved the friendly environment and positive environment. Even if you make a mistake they won’t shove your face in it. They are going to show you how to do better and then when you do well or just even okay they give you constant positive reinforcement that it makes you want to do more and do better. You become invested in their happiness because it’s so genuine.

What did you like least? (laughs) “Oh man, that’s a hard question. This isn’t really in their control but getting up super early because the office is about an hour away with traffic.”

What would you recommend to anyone who works at E&L Global Commuications or to any future interns? Don’t be afraid to take on a leadership role. During my first week I was nervous to take on a leadership role because I was super new with the company and I was afraid to step on anyone’s toes  because they were there longer than me. I eventually branched out because I realized that for me to effectively do what I needed to do in the operations role I needed to have confidence and needed to act as if I have power in the room because that’s how I was going to demand respect and get my job done.

A lot can be said about businesses that end the year strong and that’s just what we did here at E&L Global Communications. Both in November and December, our company was recognized as our client’s number 1 asset nationwide.

How did we do it?

How did our company stay motivated when many other businesses fell into the holiday season trap? How did our team not only push through and stay consistent but also exceed our targets and see growth over those months?

When we sat down and thought about it, 5 things came to mind:

 

The goal = TOTAL DOMINATION

This might be weird to say but being number 1 wasn’t our goal. Claiming a gold medal or taking the number 1 spot doesn’t always mean you’re doing well. If everyone is doing poorly and you just barely do better, that’s not enough. We wanted to dominate our market and blow our client’s away. To do that, we focused on being our best versions and beating our numbers from November.

We began with the end in mind.

In sales it’s easy to say “there are ups and downs” or “it’s seasonal” or “there are good months and bad months”. At E&L Global Communications, we would argue that the seasons and months are only as strong as your mindset. If you believe sales is seasonal, then it will be. If you believe that you can hit your goals regardless of day, week, month, or season, you open the door for much more success.

We began with the end in mind (the end being TOTAL domination). We knew that, if we were going to exceed our November, we had to keep have a relentless focus on the goal. we had to be completely in the zone. We had to wake up hungry and go to bed wanting more. Having such a clear goal made our path simple and structured.

We set our standards high

Have you ever heard the phrase- shoot for the stars and you might land on the moon? It’s easy to become complacent when you are on top. It would have been easy for us to be okay with doing what we did in November; therefore, we set our November numbers right below our standard and raised expectations. Why? Because the goal is always constant and never-ending improvement.

We knew that the right players make the right team

Not to brag too much but the individuals who make up the E&L Global Communications are some of the best individuals we’ve ever worked with. They constantly look to grow, develop, train, and come through for our clients. Like cause and effect, there is a bond within our team to see everyone else succeed that it drives everyone to perform even better and so on and so forth. Care + Commitment + Grit = Success

In December we saw numerous people step into leadership roles and training roles, take on new responsibilities, and morph into team leaders that could lead others to success.

We set out to have fun!

We have a lot of fun as a team and organization. Referring back to our 1st tip of keeping the goal in mind and our relentless attitude for success, nothing could make what we do more worth it than having a great team of positive minded, driven, and fun-loving people. Working with people who motivate you and make you laugh? #wining!

With such lofty goals, we knew we had to make the journey fun and filled with rewards along the way. We ran competitions, we competed with one another, and we shared a ton of laughs! (Peep our Instagram for proof!) Just keep in mind that the amount of fun you have starts with you. Your attitude determines your present which, in turn, affects your future.

So there you have it! Those were the big 5 things that worked for us in December.

 

2017 ended as a great year for E&L Global Communications and we’re taking this momentum into 2018. Our office is growing and we’re ready to meet with our clients in Dallas for our annual “Keys to Success” meeting where we will discuss our goals for 2018. Here in Troy, Michigan, the goal is triple in size and open two new branches.

How will we do it? By focusing on our 5️⃣ ingredients for success.

E&L Global Communications: Dreaming of Dallas!

Something you’ll gather by following our blog site or social media, is that the strength and success of E&L Global Communications is derived from our team. Without the 25+ hardworking, ambitious, passionate personalities that make our firm, we wouldn’t be a fraction of the company we are. So, in order to provide our team the kind of environment and culture they deserve, we make sure to offer 3 things: 1) a positive atmosphere, 2) challenging work and 3) the opportunity for travel.

Following just that, 7 of our team recently made their way out of Troy, down South, to the big city of Dallas. Traveling for our client brokers’ annual National Conference meant that our suits were ready and our networking skills on point! Not even plane delays could damper our spirits, haha!

We arrived that Friday and spent our night socializing with old friends and new, and of course taking in some Texas sized dinner! Yes, everything really is bigger there, including this hotel – just look at it!! Seeing as how our telecom client has representation from coast to coast, we mingled with Californians, Floridians, New Yorkers and more!

Saturday was a rollercoaster of events, ranging from motivational meetings, executive level coaching, leadership development breakouts and awards recognition. We even opened the morning in a general session for over 2,000 marketing and sales professionals! Talk about feeling a part of something larger than yourself. Our team members, then separated by their experience within the industry, received personalized coaching aimed at helped them develop into the next phase of their career. Did we mention E&L Global Communication’s VP of Marketing, Meshak, was recognized on a national level by our client for our office’s consistency and reliability to hit targets?!

The night continued to improve as we moved into a cocktail hour, 3 course dinner and red carpet fashion show (hence the mood lighting and photo booth fun)! If there’s one thing you should know about our client, it’s that they know how to have a good time and love to reward us for our year round performance. We were so distracted though by the models walking the runway and people on stilts to process diner, haha! Saturday night concluded with more networking, strategizing and meeting mentors and coaches of ours from all across the country.

As sad as we were to wrap up our weekend and head back home, we were reinvigorated to know that this conference is going to be one of hundreds over our years at E&L Global Communications. To know that they will just keep getting bigger and our team will continue getting better, brings us great joy and anticipation. Congratulations to everyone who was invited to attend, recognized and rewarded. You guys keep setting the pace for our client and we’ll keep providing the travel opportunities near and far!

 

Saying Farewell: Hannah’s Review of Interning with E&L Global Communications

It’s been a full and fulfilling 2 months interning with E&L Global Communications and as sad as I am to leave, I walk away knowing that the growth I have seen in myself is tremendous! Though never shy or lacking confidence, I can undoubtedly say that I walk and speak more sure of myself than ever. As I approach my final year at Central Michigan majoring in Fashion Design, I know that I am more qualified than ever to find my dream career out of school.

I was asked by the E&L Global Communications Management Team to write a short summary of things I loved about my internship, something that could have been improved and what I recommend for  the company…so here we go!!

Pros:

Wow, I truly don’t even know where to start!

 Management genuinely cared about me and my well-being (in and outside of the work place.) They gave me personalized one-on- one coaching catering to my goals and how I personally learn best.

COMPANY CULTURE!! When you’re surrounded by great people with the sameprofessional goals and mindset as you, what more could you want? I’ve truly metsome of the greatest people in my time here that I will always remember.

Team nights!!! Once a week we would head out after work to catch happy hour or play sand volleyball and the bonds I was able to form outside of work were even stronger than inside the office!

 Management is always setting goals, which means CONSTANT growth and CONSTANT motivation to succeed. Such an amazing atmosphere to be apart of.

Cons:

Part of me wants to say that I wish the internship were paid, but the other half of me says no. Yes absolutely, having a paid internship would have been great, but I do think that having an unpaid internship really weeds out who is there solely for a paycheck, versus who is there to genuinely learn, succeed, and see results in their work. So for me, I did not mind that the internship was unpaid, but I think maybe more applicants would consider short term and long term employment in the future if it were a paid opportunity.

Advice to Management:

Keep up the motivating and inspiring atmosphere of the office. That kind of energy is contagious and can motivate people to do things they never thought they could – because that’s what it did for me.

By The Grace Of Georgetown: A Leadership Expose on Wardell Crutchfield

Steve Jobs once said, “It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.” If you’ve ever met Wardell Crutchfield III, Lead Client Manager here at E&L Global Communications, then you’ll understand why he was hired at the beginning of 2016. Smart, educated, capable – he was the perfect addition to our growing marketing and sales team. Someone we knew would take initiative and aid in the development of our company’s future.

Born and raised in Pamona, California, Wardell grew up in a bustling family of 4 children and with parents that taught him the value of working hard for what you want in life. A gifted athlete, Wardell received a scholarship to play Division 1 Football at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Attending the oldest Catholic and Jesuit University in the US and playing football at a collegiate level taught him balance, fortitude and work ethic. A political science and art major, Wardell soon realized that his true passion lied in working face to face with people. He accepted his first job while still in college (can you say hard worker juggling that, football and school) and began working in business to business sales at the age of 19.

With a natural gift in communications, Wardell excelled in face to face marketing and sales, using both his personality and humor to drive results. Prior to graduation and combined with his work experience, he was offered full time employment as a pharmaceutical rep representing Johnson & Johnson. Transferred from Washington, DC to Detroit, Michigan left Wardell in a unique situation. He was, for the first time, completely alone, having moved to a city where he had no family and knew no friends. Throwing himself into work, Wardell excelled with Johnson & Johnson but sought more advancement and responsibilities based on his performance rather than tenure. Realizing that it would take him 10 years or more to move into a Management position, Wardell began seeking new employment and fortuitously stumbled upon E&L Global Communication’s advertisement on LinkedIn.

Interviewing with both the HR Manager, Suzanne, and VP of Marketing, Meshak, Wardell was immediately impressed with the work culture and opportunity for advancement her at E&L Global Communications. In the 3 months that he has been employed, he has grown in not only consulting and communication skills, but also in training, team building and interviewing techniques. With a goal to be promoted  to an Operations Management position by year end, Wardell will soon be training in areas such as human resources, payroll, bookkeeping and client management. By March, his intentions are to help us oversee an additional office location for E&L Global Communications outside of the Troy/Detroit area.

One of the hardest workers we know, you can almost always find Wardell at the office or in the kitchen, as it turns out he’s a ridiculously gifted cook! We asked him his favorite dish to make and he talked about his love for grilling and the killer salmon and pasta he makes (YUM!). Besides just his cooking skills (which we can’t believe you haven’t shared in the office break room haha), we value Wardell  for his drive and determination. Despite any minor setback that comes his way, he always reminds us that to get to the light (success in business/life), you have to make your way through the darkness (hardships/obstacles). We’re so glad that we listened to Steve Jobs all those months ago and hired someone with the brains and the mentality to constantly steer E&L Global Communications in the right direction; global expansion on behalf of our client, TMobile. We can’t wait to see all that this young man will continue to accomplish personally and everything we will achieve together professionally.

A Bit About Becca – A Promotion Story!

In the 4 years since we founded E&L Global Communications, we have learned that there are some people who serve a purpose and some people who create purpose. When we met Becca a month ago as she was going through her interview process, we instantly knew she was the latter. The spark and passion for life that Becca carried with her radiated and we knew that we wanted that force of nature in our company!

Born and raised in South Lyon, Michigan, Becca is a proud and recent (as of two weeks ago!) graduate of Michigan State and Oakland University. Studying economics and mathematics,  she knew that her schooling would be considered abnormal when applying to a marketing and sales firm, but firmly believed that the entry level opportunity provided by E&L Global Communication’s Management Program was exactly what a recent grad like herself needed.

Interviewing with both the Human Resources Director, Suzanne, and VP or Marketing, Meshak, further solidified her decision that this would be her new home after school. Not even a month after her graduation, we’re writing to congratulate Becca on her promotion to Lead Client Manager on behalf of our Fortune 1000 client, TMobile, and we’re still in awe at her rapid progression in our company!

When we asked Becca what helped in her development, she said “hands down the work environment and culture. It’s easy to do something well when you enjoy the people you’re doing it with.” With goals to be promoted to the 3rd phase of our Management Program (Operations Manager) by the end of 2016, Becca has set extremely aggressive action-items in place in order to set records here at our firm.

As a growing marketing firm in the Troy/Detroit area, it’s imperative to our company’s success to surround ourselves with the finest talent…and we absolutely found that in Becca. Described by our VP of Marketing, Meshak, as a “fun, friendly and fearless” young professional, we can’t wait to see all that she does in these next 7 months of the year!
